How we carry out batteries

A car battery typically lasts three to five years. As it ages, its cold-cranking amps (CCA) — the power available to start the engine in cold conditions — drop below the threshold needed for reliable starting. We use a conductance-based battery tester that measures the battery's actual health (not just its charge state), so we can tell you whether a flat battery simply needs a charge or whether it's genuinely failing and needs replacement. On modern cars with stop-start systems and regenerative charging, battery quality matters even more.

Signs of a failing battery include slow engine cranking (especially on cold mornings), the battery warning light on the dashboard, electrical accessories behaving oddly, or the car needing a jump start more than once. A failing alternator can produce similar symptoms — we can test the charging system at the same time to confirm whether the problem is the battery, the alternator, or both. Sometimes what appears to be a dead battery is a parasitic drain (something left on or a faulty module keeping a circuit active overnight) — we can diagnose that too.

We carry a range of standard and AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries to cover the most common applications. AGM batteries are required as replacements on cars with stop-start systems — fitting a standard battery in place of an AGM one will damage the charging system over time. On many modern vehicles the replacement battery must also be 'registered' to the car's battery management system using a scan tool; we carry the equipment to do this correctly.
