A clutch replacement involves removing the gearbox (on most front-wheel-drive cars), replacing the clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing as a set, resurfacing or replacing the flywheel if it's scored or showing heat cracks, and reinstalling and adjusting everything to the correct torque settings. It's a major job, but on many popular hatchbacks and saloons it can be completed on a level driveway or workshop apron without lifting the car on a ramp — the gearbox comes out from below with the car supported safely on axle stands.
Symptoms of a worn clutch include slipping (the engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate proportionally), a high or low biting point, juddering on take-off, difficulty selecting gears, a heavy or stiff clutch pedal, or a burning smell after hill starts. On hydraulic clutch systems a spongy or sinking pedal can indicate a failing master or slave cylinder rather than the clutch plate itself — we'll diagnose which component is at fault before quoting.
Because a clutch replacement is labour-intensive, it's good practice to inspect and replace the dual-mass flywheel (DMF) if worn, and to replace the gearbox input-shaft oil seal while everything is apart — small extra costs at this stage avoid a repeat job later. We'll advise what we find and let you decide, with no pressure to do more than you need.
On most front-wheel-drive vehicles, yes — the gearbox is removed from below with the car raised on axle stands, and the job does not require a pit or ramp. We'll confirm suitability for your specific vehicle when you enquire.
We always inspect the flywheel when replacing a clutch. If it's a solid flywheel with scoring we can often resurface it. If it's a dual-mass flywheel showing signs of wear, we'll advise replacement — doing it now saves repeating the labour cost later.
